How the Horizon subsidy works

The biggest barrier to going solar is almost never the long-term savings, but the weight of the monthly payment. Your solar system is financed through a monthly payment, and even though it saves you money over time, that recurring bill can be hard for many families to sustain. The Horizon subsidy attacks exactly that problem: we do not subsidize the price of the panels, but your monthly payment.

Instead of a loan you have to repay on your own, Horizon provides a subsidy that covers between 25% and 75% of your solar system’s monthly payment. The exact percentage is defined according to your risk profile, and your entry into the program ranges from $2,500 to $5,000. The result is that your monthly payment is significantly reduced, making it much easier to keep your solar energy month after month.

Those subsidy payments are exactly the payments you see in your client portal: each month Horizon contributes its share of your monthly payment, and you see it reflected with full transparency. On top of that, every month your system produces energy is money you do not pay to the electric company; in jurisdictions with net metering, the surplus you generate can be credited to your bill, improving the savings even further and reducing your dependence on electricity rates.

Solar energy and resilience: peace of mind during blackouts

In Puerto Rico, electricity is not only expensive: it is also unstable. Hurricanes, storms, and grid failures have left entire families without service for days or even weeks. A solar system with battery storage changes that reality, because your home can keep producing and storing its own energy even when the grid collapses.

That resilience has a value hard to measure in money: being able to keep refrigerators with medication running, charge phones to stay in touch, preserve food, and give your family a minimum of normalcy when everything else fails. For many families, this peace of mind is the main reason to take the step toward solar energy.

The role of your authorized solar consultant

Families join the Horizon program through authorized solar consultants: professionals who sell and design renewable energy equipment. Your consultant assesses your consumption, sizes the right system for your home, and guides you through every stage of the process, from the quote to commissioning.

If you are already working with a solar consultant, simply ask them to enroll you in the Horizon program to access the subsidy. Once enrolled, you define your profile and subsidy percentage, and you track your case and your payments directly from your client portal.

Eligibility requirements

To access the Families program, your case must meet these minimum requirements:

  • Entry of $2,500 to $5,000

The entry amount is defined according to your risk profile (Conservative, Moderate, or Aggressive).

  • System of 20 to 35 panels, with battery

At minimum, your solar system must have 20 to 35 panels and include a battery to ensure savings and resilience during blackouts.

  • Enrollment via authorized consultant

You join the program through an authorized solar consultant, who sells and registers your case.

⚖️ Does your case fall outside these parameters? Special cases are evaluated by a committee on a monthly basis. Any consultant can submit a special case for evaluation.

Frequently asked questions for families

How much do solar panels cost, and what does Horizon subsidize?

The total cost of a solar system and its monthly payment vary according to the size of your home and your electricity consumption; your authorized consultant will give you an accurate quote. Important: Horizon does not subsidize the price of the panels, but your monthly payment: we cover between 25% and 75% of your monthly payment based on your risk profile, significantly reducing what you pay each month.

How exactly does the Horizon subsidy work?

Horizon provides a subsidy that covers 25% to 75% of your solar system’s monthly payment. It is not a loan and it does not apply to the price of the panels: it is capital that directly reduces your monthly payment. The percentage is defined according to your risk profile when you enroll through an authorized solar consultant, and each subsidy payment shows up in your portal.

Do I need good credit to participate?

The Horizon program is a subsidy, not a debt product, so the approach is different from a traditional loan. The specific requirements are evaluated at the time of enrollment together with your authorized solar consultant.

What happens if there is a blackout?

If your system includes battery storage, your home can keep using the solar energy it produces and stores even when the power grid fails. This resilience is one of the great advantages of solar energy in Puerto Rico, where prolonged blackouts are frequent.

How much can I save on my electric bill?

The savings depend on your consumption, the size of the system, and local rates. Since electricity in Puerto Rico is among the most expensive in the United States, the savings are usually substantial. Where net metering applies, the surplus energy you produce can be credited to your bill and increase the benefit even further.

What requirements must my solar system meet?

To enter the program, in addition to the entry of $2,500 to $5,000 based on your risk profile, your system must have 20 to 35 solar panels and include a battery, at minimum. This requirement ensures a system with enough capacity to generate real savings and provide resilience during blackouts. Your authorized solar consultant sizes the system and confirms it meets these parameters.

What if my case does not meet the requirements or is a special case?

If your case falls outside the 20-to-35-panels-with-battery range, it can be submitted as a special case. Any consultant can submit a special case for evaluation, and a committee reviews them on a monthly basis. Talk to your authorized solar consultant so they can prepare and present your case to the committee.

How do I enroll and how do I track my case?

You enroll through an authorized solar consultant, who also sells your equipment. Once enrolled, you define your profile and subsidy percentage, and from your client portal you see your case status and the payments received at all times.
